Transforming Public Education podcast
From the Transforming Public Education podcast hosted by M. Shannon Hernandez. Co-founder Aaron Eden discusses what we need to re-think in education to truly be educating for a sustainable future.
iLead+Design is a “design thinking community action studio” that Aaron co-founded in Monterey, California in 2012. The program has run for four summers now and brings high school students from around Monterey County to work together in small teams with dedicated coaches to tackle real problems in the community with community partners.
GreenLEAP was iLead+Design on a larger scale, for a longer period. Green School high school students worked in 11 teams, with a guest team of masters students from Hong Kong Polytech Design School, guest coaches from around the world, and community partners from around Bali.
LEAP Academy is a new model for high school that is independent of the normal structure of school. The schedule is determined by the needs of the group projects each team pursues and by the needs of the individual participants. Just like it would in a setting in the real world where a group of people get together to support each other in group and individual pursuits. The focus is on supporting development of entrepreneurial learners, with accountability flipped so that students set their goals and are assisted in being accountable to themselves.
Co-founder Aaron Eden delivers a talk on the foundational assumptions in education that must be changed if schools are to become future-ready.
